Description: Taken by photographer Ihna Thayer Frary in 1924, this photograph shows an unidentified house in Huntington, Ohio. The two-story home features small frieze windows underneath the roof, and a front doorway surrounded by a decorative post and lintel arch. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1873, Ihna Thayer Frary was a prominent American art and architecture scholar, whose primary interest was the architectural heritage of the region of northeastern Ohio known as the Western Reserve. In addition to serving as publicity and membership secretary of the Cleveland Museum of Art, he was a professor of Ohio and American architecture at the Cleveland Institute of Art and Western Reserve University’s School of Architecture. Over the course of his career, Frary was a design consultant for private clients and designed furniture, and was an active member of several prominent arts councils in the Cleveland area. In 1963, Frary and his two sons donated his entire photographic collection to the Ohio Historical Society (now the Ohio History Connection). The Ihna Thayer Frary Collection consists of 4,000 5 x 7 photographs of private residences, churches, taverns, and public buildings, as well as select rural buildings, bridges, archaeological sites, and public monuments. Description: This engraved image is portrait of Samuel Huntington (1765-1817), the third governor of Ohio, who served one two-year term from 1808-1810. This profile portrait shows Huntington as a beardless young man with chin-length hair combed back over his collar. His shirtfront has a modest ruffle, and his jacket has a narrow collar. The son of a minister, Samuel Huntington was born in Coventry, Connecticut, on October 4, 1765. He attended Dartmouth and Yale Colleges before studying the law, practicing in Connecticut from 1793 to 1800. In 1800, Huntington traveled to the Northwest Territory, visiting the Connecticut Western Reserve and Marietta. The following year, he moved his family to the fledgling community of Cleveland, which was still located in the midst of the wilderness. In 1807, Huntington traded his land in Cleveland for a tract of land in Painesville Township, co-founding the community of Fairport and developing a number of business interests there. Within a very short time of his move to Ohio, Huntington became active in territorial politics. He served as lieutenant colonel of the Trumbull County militia, supervisor of the roads, and a justice of the peace. Huntington became very involved in the debate over Ohio statehood, siding against Governor Arthur St. Clair's attempts to impede the statehood process. In 1802, he served as a member of the first constitutional convention, allying himself with men such as Thomas Worthington and Edward Tiffin. Once Ohio became a state in 1803, Huntington served as a judge on the Ohio Supreme Court, along with Return J. Meigs, Jr. and William Sprigg. In 1804, Huntington became chief justice of the court. As chief justice, one of his most famous cases was Rutherford v. M'Fadden (1807). Modeling the state's supreme court after the United States Supreme Court, in this ruling Huntington and his fellow justices determined that the court had the right to declare state laws unconstitutional. This decision placed the court at odds with members of the state legislature, who felt that the court was trying to reduce their power to make laws. This decision became an issue in the gubernatorial election of 1808, when Huntington ran against fellow Democratic-Republicans Worthington and Thomas Kirker. His opponents argued in favor of the sovereignty of the state legislature in making laws, while Huntington continued to argue that the Supreme Court had the authority to declare laws unconstitutional. Because Worthington and Kirker divided their supporters' votes, Huntington was able to win the election and became Ohio's third governor, serving from 1808 to 1810. Huntington's term as governor was not without controversy. Although he himself was not targeted, the state legislature tried to impeach two other judges for decisions similar to the Rutherford v. M'Fadden case. These impeachment proceedings were ultimately unsuccessful. The two judges, Calvin Pease and George Tod, maintained their positions by a single vote each. The state capital was moved to Zanesville for a time, and there was continued debate over its permanent location. In addition, there was considerable unease about potential military conflict with Great Britain, which ultimately did occur with the War of 1812. Choosing not to run for reelection as governor in 1810, Huntington instead ran against Worthington for U.S. Senator. He was unsuccessful in this election and returned home after finishing out his term as governor. During the War of 1812, General William Henry Harrison appointed him army paymaster. Description: This photograph shows a view of South High Street Columbus, Ohio, looking north. A streetcar and autos share the road; parked cars line both sides of the street. The sidewalks are crowded with pedestrians. The top of the LeVeque Tower is seen in the far background. Columbus's famed Neil House hotel is situated in the middle of the block. The hotel was erected in the 1820s as a tavern. Proprietor William built a hotel on the site in 1839; this structure burned down on Nov. 6, 1860 and was replaced in 1862 by new building. In turn, that hotel was replaced in 1924 by the structure seen in the photo. This 600-room hotel was torn down in the 1980s to make room for the expanded Huntington Bank Building. Lucy Webb was born on August 28, 1831 in Chillicothe, Ohio. She married Rutherford B Hayes on December 30, 1832. They became the parents of eight children. She died in Fremont, Ohio on June 25, 1889 and was buried in Fremont City Cemetery. Later, she was re-interred to Spiegel Grove. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This color images shows the entrance to the Mathews House, a historic building now located on the campus of Lake Erie College, Painesville, Ohio. Three steps lead to the front door, which is framed by two side lights and topped by a fanlight with ornamentation (difficult to see in this image). The famed master architect and builder Jonathan Goldsmith (1783-1847) designed and built this well-proportioned Greek Revival residence for Dr. John H. Mathews (1785-1862), the first physician in Painesville, Ohio. The house also served as the first hospital in that community. It is considered to be one of the finest Goldsmith houses. The house was moved to its present location on the campus of Lake Erie College from its original North State Street site in 1949. Lake Erie College is on the National Register of Historic Places. Dr. John Henry Mathews married Martha Devotion Huntington, daughter of Samuel H. Huntington, third governor of Ohio. According to the Western Reserved Historical Society, Dr. Mathews was an abolitionist and suspected member of the Underground Railroad. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph identified on the reverse as the smokestack on the Huntington Bank building in Columbus, Ohio, as it was undergoing work by the C.W. Bryant Jr. Company. Charles William Bryant Jr. was born in Dayton in 1882, and from his start as a farmhand with a 3rd grade education would go on to become a prominent African American businessman, self-taught engineer, and owner of one of Columbus’ largest construction firms. The C. W. Bryant Rigging & Moving Co. was involved in major projects throughout Columbus, including the construction of a temporary Broad Street bridge following the 1913 flood, the removal of lighting arcs from High Street, and dismantling Hanford Village in 1962 for the construction of I-71. Bryant faced racial discrimination in his personal and professional life, including the refusal of local steelworkers’ unions to admit Bryant’s black employees, which forced Bryant Co. out of steel construction in the 1950s. He nonetheless expanded into other areas, including ownership of Bryco gas stations, a coal and oil company, the Litchford and Macon hotels, and the Ohio Malt Beverage Co.-the first African American distributor in Columbus. Description: This is a photo of a silk guidon of the 1st Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery, Battery H. This swallowtail Stars and Stripes once bore 34 stars: 12 in inner circle, 18 in outer circle, and one each in the canton's for corners. The regiment was called upon April 21, 1861 in a letter to Colonel James Barnett from the Governor, William Dennison. Each Battery of the 1st has its own history and operated independently in battle. Their initial appointment was for three months, though most served an additional campaign for three to five years. Battery H was quickly appointed to another 3 year campaign at Camp Dennison near Cincinnati and mustered into service November 7,1861. Major engagements in which the battery took part include Port Republic, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, and the siege of Petersburg. The battery was mustered out at Camp Cleveland on June 14, 1865.
